The Lancet Commission on Prevention of Viral Spillover, co-chaired by Raina, call out the WHO Pandemic Accord’s lack of primary prevention

Scientists, including those from the Lancet-PPATS Commission on Prevention of Viral Spillover (co-chaired by Raina), call for the Pandemic Accord draft to highlight spillover prevention, which “protects everyone, everywhere, and might have especially strong benefits for communities at high risk of adverse outcomes from pandemics” in a newly published Lancet letter.

Currently, the Pandemic Accord has a lack of primary prevention. Only four sentences mention the spillover of pathogens between animals and humans, despite this being the origin of most—if not all—recent viral pandemics.

This letter calls on Pandemic Accord member states to produce a text with meaningful provisions on primary pandemic prevention, One Health, and equity.
